Has anyone
1.) heard of this
2.)got one
if so,are they any good,they are supposed to remove gunge etc from radiators and pipes so they work more efficiently,but I wonder is it just another ploy by British Gas to get money from us.I would be grateful for any advice or comments.

Yes I tried this a few years ago and quite honestly nothing changed at all! I'm very surprised that british gas is doing this as I just bought it through a catalogue!! and only £10 at the time!! also at the same time you could buy the equivalent to use lees petrol in the car!!!...... maybe things have evolved since then so awating other answers.

Sorry coccinelle ... you cant fit a Magnabooster 2 on your car. It's for central heating systems only.
It's like a filter that removes particles from your heating systems by trapping them magnetically... rather than me trying to explain it, have a glance at this..

Sorry I can't help, Giveup. It's a new one on me. I would have thought that using an inhibitor in the system and having a good drain down occasionally should be plenty. £250 sounds a lot.
I'd be interested to know what Homer thinks ;o)

The idea of removing gunk in-line from a CH system first surfaced about 10 years ago with a patented devide called a Magnaclean. This was a magnetic filter that seemed a good idea, though I heard reports about leaks so I held off fitting one. I reckoned it seemed pretty expensive for 'oil filter' technology. Magnaclean have continued to innovate and starting producing a double filter - one magnetic to remove magnetite and another for non-magnetic gunk. Fernox then got in on the act, somehow finding a way around Magnaclean's patents.

Now this new gadget has turned up - which seems a lot simpler and smaller than earlier devices. I looked at the video and it seems to work as a centrifuge. It is certaintly a lot cheaper to buy (as a component).

I'm still uncertain whether these things are worth having - I still haven't fitted one to my own CH system.

Either way, I'd find another quote from a heating technician, in competition to BG (if I wasn't capable of DIYing it), who rarely offer good value, IMHO.

Thank you all for your replies,I'm a bit sceptical because we are in a very hard water area and I dont see how anything could remove years of gunge build up. I shall obviously see what else I can find out about this and think about it It seems quite expensive to me.

Have just been talking to my husband about this he's away at sea (marine engineer)and he said if they were any good ships would have been using them for years because of the money it costs in various chemicals etc to do the same job.Think thats what he meant.
