I have been asked how can you know if something is made of brass, or

is not brass?

Its not Solid Brass if Magnetic

After the magnet test, scratch an area that doesn't show.. If you see a shiny yellow scratch, the item is likely solid brass. If you see a silvery scratch, or a deffinite color of anything else, it's not solid brass.

Well if it ain't Brass, IE Brass plated a magnet won't stick to it.
