They are supposed to drop off - the beans form when they drop off. But if they are dropping off too soon (i.e. before the flower has been pollenated and the bean has set) it could be because of lack of moisture. Runners like a humid atmosphere. This latest hot spell has, unusually for the UK been accommpanied by low humidity. Try giving your beans a fine mist spray...

Lack of water, they need lots of it.
Dehydration maybe? Water, water and water them more.
