My same big mucker is wanting to get his new house secured....any advice on an alarm system??

Do a bit of research in your immediate area by looking at any security boxes on the houses in nearby streets. It is usually a good sign if one particular company's name comes up more than another - suggests that they are doing a good job and are being recommened by others. It is not a good idea to knock doors and ask about security systems! When you have decided upon a company arrange for a home visit and they will suggest a tailor-made solution for you. Get a couple more quotes and advice and go from there. We have a cat, and the firm we used even managed to give us an alarm which wouldn't react to the cat in the house when we were out.

telephone your Police Station and ask for the CPO or Crime Prevention Officer. They will give you free up to date advice and can even survey your house for security updates. Further they sometimes run promotion schemes with local alarm retailers and you get a big fat discount!!
