This seems a vigorous plant. If I planted the seeds would they grow?

probably but again its a thug. be sure you want it in your garden, its very hard to get rid of

There was a big patch of nettles at the bottom of the garden which I've just cut back. I'll plant the seeds there and watch to see which prospers.

You could try of course, but a much quicker method of propagation would be to remove some bulbs (corms) from a clump and plant them.
