In the 40s and 50s my mother used to make coal fires every day, and made special things using newspaper which she folded in a certain way. I can't remember what she called them, the word 'skewers' come to mind, but I'm sure that's not correct.
Any ideas please?

Boxtops, that's what I meant by the word 'Bleezer'
Until we moved to this house we had fires in most rooms, we don't have any now and I hate it, soulless house. We used to make the little twisted accordian spills you describe but just called them paper 'fire fans'- which I'm fairly sure we invented word wise so probably not what you are looking for.
We got our sticks in the woods, or Dad would chop up logs with his massive axe. Do people still have axes these days? - Guess there's no need, when you can buy kindling in many shops.

Many shops sell kindling? lol, where do you live. ;D

LOL, I'd take a wild stab at Middle Earth!
Everywhere round here sells logs and kindling, although we cut our own quite often because it was so expensive. I think anywhere rural sells it.
Shops where I live sell kindling. You can reach me at Naomi c/o Middle Earth. ;o)
Ar, Gollum lives next door :-)

If we were really lucky, the newspaper used to catch fire - that was exciting!
Boxy, a new neighbour - I've yet to find out.
honest to god, chilli, I actually typed that but I thought it might be taken the wrong way, so I changed it to 1875 and Bangladesh. But again thought better of it.
Svejk, :o)

LOL yeah, done that a few times myself. Poker set upright in the middle of the grate, large piece of newspaper to draw the fire then it'd catch too well and you had to get the paper inside before the fireball engulfed you!
That's the one, chill - and bits of black newspaper with sparkling red edges fluttering about in the living room.....

The petrol stations in my area sell kindling, as do the farm shops. I think I've even seen it in Home Bargains (we don't have a Home Bargains in the village but it's only a few miles away).

There's plenty of kindling wood round my parts.
I've never looked for it, to be honest, i'll ask when I go to the cobblers tomorrow. ;-/
Yes plenty petrol stations here sell it too, we're a big town not a village.
I have two axes.
Two hatchets
And a panga.
