My guess is it was the protected lesser known 'White head' moth. They are one of the worlds rarest moths. Infact it was believed there was one breeding pair left in the northern hemisphere.

I'm with Ric.ror on this one.. we kill moths too... we have carpet moths.. the carpets were professionally treated a few years ago.. but they've come back...in lots of places.. the have completely eaten the pile of the carpet away in lots of places... its confined to downstairs at the mo .... one patch is the size of a dinner plate...and there are lots of new patches appearing now!
crisper i too have suffered that and have a good quality wool carpet ruined in areas of most downstairs rooms. We bought something from amazon that sorted it but they were not moths but rather the carpet beetle which looks like a very small grey and black ladybird. I'd never kill moths or anything else ..except spiders, they get the chop if they come in the house I'm afraid.
