But remember you have to pay for sewage and wastewater disposal as well.
That is 90% of the amount of water through the meter
So if you use 100 Cu Meters you are billed for for 100 CM water and 90CM of waste / sewage. Sewage is normally more per unit than the water.

Thanks EDDIES, in that case I seem to be running up a large water bill. The meter has only been in a week and it's on 5 units already!!
Are you sure it started on Zero?
There is usually a unit or 2 on the meter from tests when it is installed.
Take an accurate reading and then do the reading again exactly a day or two later.

There are 3 numbers, black on a white background I think then 2 red numbers next to it. Can't see it in the dark but I think it read 5.44 earlier. I'm assuming that means nearly 5 and a half cubic meters.
Yes, that is 5.44 Cu metres , but meters often have a reading above zero when they are installed. The water company should have given you the initial reading which may not have been 0.00
My meter had an initial reading of 3. 14 or near but not 0.00

The initial reading was very low. I don't think we use a lot of water, I'm concerned this is costing more than pre metered, oh well we have a 2 year "cooling off"" period!! Thanks for the help EDDIE51xxx
you may have a leak. Turn off the water at the stop cock in the house and look carefully at the meter for a few minutes to see if it moves up at all.
5 units a week is very high, we use around 100 units a YEAR!, that is less than 2 units a week, for a 3 bedroom house.
I think you have a leak, call the water company, they will be happy to check for leaks , if you are not happy to do it yourself.

Definitely no leak. It was actually installed 3 weeks ago but then we went away for two weeks. Because we are on shared supply with next door I took an accurate reading to make sure their supply was not going through our meter. The reading was exactly the same on our return!! Thanks againxxx
