What is the best way of pointing a flakey wall? What's best to use? Do you need to prime? Allow lots of drying time? Thanks.

Pointing or painting ? If pointing, please explain what you mean by a "flakey wall".
Question Author

hi. I guess in bigmingam they're the same thing :-)

I do mean pointing, restoring damage/cracked paint. Flakey as in big time flakey, years of paint are coming off in chunks.

Is the existing paint direct on brickwork ? Or was the wall rendered first and then painted ? Is the existing paint gloss, or some proprietory decoration ? Or is it one of the cement based paints ? Is the wall facing the predominant weather, and, if so, is this the reason the decoration is coming off ? Is the wall damp ?

Hi, thanks for that.

Is the existing paint direct on brickwork ? Very old house, external walls, not brick, kind of big stones.

Or was the wall rendered first and then painted ? Stones, renered.

Is the existing paint gloss, or some proprietory decoration ? Emulsion.

Or is it one of the cement based paints ? No.

Is the wall facing the predominant weather, and, if so, is this the reason the decoration is coming off ? Is the wall damp ? Walls are damp, face all directions, very exposed.

Cheers. What you doin later? Fancy comin round?

What's the best way? Well Hire the A-team of course, BA'd sort that no problem.
So what you have is a stone external wall (with no cavity ?) which has been plastered on the inside and then emulsioned. The wall is damp and the emulsion is falling off. Is the plaster disintegrating ?
