could you not put up the fence but only just on yourside (so you don't lose land)?
you beat me piper!  absolutely no reason why you can't put your own fence up as long as you don't attach it to hers

When we bought our house the solicitor pointed out to us in the deeds that we are responsible for the fencing on the boundary to the right at the back of the property.

This would seem to support what your neighbour is saying.

yes we did that in one of our houses some years back. We did not get on too well with the neighbours and they put a wire fence up on their side which meant we had no privacy. We erected one on our side and then they thought they could take theirs down but that is not the case because it was a boundary fence. Its better if you can both agree but if not put a six foot one up so you dont have to see them
You MUST check your deeds (okay, so someone will come on here and say there aren't any deeds anymore - so any paperwork relating to the house) as in our first house our fence was on the left, in our second house our fence was on the right and in this house all boundaries are jointly owned!

Check your house plans (deeds) as these will tell you which fence is your responsibility.
The others are right - nothing to stop you putting up a fence inside your own boundary - as long as you don't attach to your neighbour's fence for support.

Personally I'd put up a trellis - and train honeysuckle, clematis or wisteria along it. In a few years she will be completely blocked out.

Whatever you do, don't be tempted by any fast growing conifers - there are laws against these and they can cause damage to drains and the house foundations not just for you but for your neighbours as well - last thing you need is a claim against you for damage!

Generally as you look at your house from the front, the boundary you own is to the left.  However, there are exceptions and you should ask a solicitor to look at the deeds for clarity and to pacify your neighbour.

As mentioned above, you can erect a fence on your property, on your side of the boundary providing it does not exceed 2.00m in height, without any approvals from your neighbour.  You must not damage or interfere with the existing boundary if it is her's though.  If she decides to remove the old fence and use the new boundary though, you need to get a solictor to confirm in writing that this new boundary is in your property and thus under your ownership.

Be careful, and always seek legal clarification 1st, particularly with awkward neighbours.
