Problem with my shower

My shower has developed a problem. It will run for about a minute then stops. If i turn it off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on it will run for a while and cut out again. Any suggestions? I have descaled the head recently.

Could be an air bubble, also maybe a blockage in the hose, take it off and blow through it. Just possiblities

Sounds like the 'protective' thermostat is on the blink. This will cut the water if it thinks it is getting too hot to prevent scalding. Can be caused by low water pressure or it may have just 'aged' and gone out of spec.

What make is the shower and how old is it ? Do you live in a hard water area ?

The shower is a Newlec Calypso plus, about 5 years old and yes I live in a hard water area. I already checked the pipe for blockages. I`ve noticed the light on the cord switch also goes out when the water stops flowing.

it could be the filter, you'll have to take the cover off, take out the filter and give it a rinse...

If the light on the pull switch also goes out - it could indicate a problem within the switch. Either a loose connection or the internals of the switch breaking down under load. Turn off the power to the shower pull switch at your fuse board. Remove the screws that hold the switch onto the back box. Check to see if there are any burnt wires, check to see if all terminations are tight. If neccessary replace the switch - this will be a cheaper option than buying a new shower. A new switch should cost around �10 or so. Make sure you get the correct type though, and not just a normal light switch. They are usually double-pole (switches both live and neutral) and are rated at 45amp. Hope this helps.

I checked the pull switch. There was no scorching but a wire was showing through the plastic. I have cut back the wires and re-fixed to no avail. Now there is a dim light and when you turn on shower the light goes out and no water at all.

You now really could do with checking for voltage in the correct places. You will probably be better off getting an electrician to do this for you as he/she will know where voltages are supposed to be, find if there is a neutral missing, if the pull switch is not letting both live and neutral through. They could even check in the fuse board to make sure nothing is wrong in there. Possibly sounds that you have lost a live or neutral somewhere, probably at the pull cord.

Problem solved. It was the pull switch, a loose terminal. Thanks to everyone who answered my call for help especially shaunjosh.
