Im thinking of getting one. Seem to be loads on the market. Anyone got any advice/comments on a reliable inexpensive mid range one that does what its supposed to?

One with a rotating head is useful - you can trim vertical edges with it, if you see what I mean.

You need to decide if you want petrol or electric. Then buy the cheapest one you can, use it once and put it away- never to be seen again. It's the gardening equivalent of a foot-spa!

About 4 years ago I bit the bullet and bought a brand new Stihl strimmer for £135.. to use around the allotment.

It has never let me down and starts on the 2nd pull every time. I have just been offered £100 for it, so a well looked after Stihl holds it's value. Everyone else at the allotment has all the cheaper makes and they spend more time being repaired than they do strimming. It takes a lot of bad language to start most cheap strimmers... and they all end up in the back of the shed as they wont start and it costs at least £60 to have a technician look at it.
Do yourself a favour and get a new Stihl .. remember .. no starting problems and they hold their value. If you look on Ebay you will see how much they sell for 2nd hand.

if you just want it for light use, i would look at the Gtech. It has a rechargeable battery and uses a plastic blade instead of a cord. I have NEVER had a cord one where the cord stayed untangled.

I think its good value for money if you want something thats versatile to go for one that you can change to different tools (expand it range), where you can have a strimmer, hedge trimmer, chainsaw, brushcutter, etc all in one.
Thats if you have a use for a multi purpose power unit ?

I got one about 15 years ago , tried to use it once could not get the hang of it. Been under the stairs ever since :(
