Would anyone recommend installing CCTV? Does anyone have a system in place? What sort of cost would I be looking at and is the installation messy?

I have CCTV. I have cameras that are wifi enabled so I can view recorded videos from any smartphone or computer connected to the internet. Very useful when I am away from home or hear strange noises in the night!

Each camera plugs in to its own standard plug socket - they are not interconnected and there is no recording box to connect to. I find it an easy and neat solution but you must have reliable broadband otherwise they are useless.

About £130 per camera so not cheap, but worth it in my opinion. I have two external cameras (one front, one back) and one internal camera.

Forgot to say I can also view live footage from anywhere in the world. I can download the recordings and do with them whatever I like but they are stored for 7 days in the cloud. The clarity is excellent.

I Purchased & fitted 2, front / Rear from Maplins, I would recommend, Aldie are selling £49.00, not sure if it's 2, but at that price I would have though so

Just curious hc - if there's no recording box, where do the recordings get stored??

I recently fitted a 4 camera system to our house ..... if I can do it, trust me anyone can. The biggest pain was drilling a hole through the wall for the camera cables to go through (I cheated - I got a friend to drill the hole).

A few tips when you're looking:

make sure the DVR box has a hard drive included (1 TB should be enough, depending on how many cameras you want). Some deals seem quite cheap, but if they come without a hard drive, it'll prob work out more expensive.

plus, make sure you get good quality cameras. Nothing more frustrating than watching poor quality CCTV footage. My cameras are 1500 TVL, so make sure you go for a minimum of 1500 TVL.

I can also watch the cameras via the internet .... handy to spy on the missus lol .....

I paid approx £135 off Ebay and that was for everything - 4 cameras, DVR (+ 1TB hard drive), plus all the cables, leads, plugs etc.

Gizmonster, everything is stored automatically in the cloud for 7 days, so even if arsonists burn the house down I still have my recordings. I get email alerts whenever motion is detected, and I can watch the videos, download them and email them or do whatever I like with them.

I assumed it would be some online storage, such as cloud, etc (where else could it be stored lol??).
My only wonder would be how much room you'd be allowed.
I have 2 cameras on constant record 24/7 and 2 cameras that record on motion detect. This fills up 1 TB of storage in approx 2 1/2 to 3 weeks, before it overwrites the oldest recording.
I'm just wondering how much storage you're allowed on cloud??

It's unlimited for one week or I could pay for unlimited for 30 days. Obviously any footage I want to keep I can download and keep forever.
