Now that the weather is getting wetter and colder, I want to keep the conservatory door open but closed.

I want the hounds to have access out into the garden but for the access to close behind them to keep warmth in and rain out, this is a heated conservatory full of cactus plants, so need to be able to prevent them freezing.

Also I cant have a conventional dog flap due to the size of the hounds.

I was looking for a magnetic strip curtain but these only appear to be available in net form.

Any ideas?

Minty, I'm really not into cats, they are a bloody nuisance!

Ive had cats all my life until the last 12 years, never again.

Ha Ha, Togo, you will have a two seater sofa and two chairs to sit on, a slate floor and the warmth of 3 rather large hounds to keep you comfy, they so love the conservatory.

Oh, you may have to fight the hounds for the sofa, that is theirs, they wont give it up easily. :-)
Ratter...if you are going to have the door open, in the winter, won't it be very cold ?

A curtain will do nothing to keep the chill winds out, where you live !
I think Ratter is Mid Wales Mikey. About midway between You and I.
Togo....I know where Ratter lives, at least roughly. And its not in the tropical part of Wales, thats for sure !

Mikey, the door is actually in a sheltered area, even when it rains with the door open and the wind blows it doesnt come into the conservatory. its just the cold im concerned with, this is why im thinking that if I leave the door open 15 inches with a magnetic strip curtain keeping it closed, the heavy cloth curtain will add to keeping the temperature up a little.

I'm Just outside Llandrindod Wells but in a fairly sheltered location.
Are you not afraid that vermin might come in if you leave the door open??
Ratter....not that far from "Llandegley International Airport" as I recall....must be very handy when you are going long-haul !

OK....I may have misunderstood your question....I had visions of a cold chilly wind running through your whole house !

Elliemay, Are you not afraid that vermin might come in if you leave the door open?? Not really, I was a pest controller for 13 years so well equipped to cope if they do come in, we do get the odd mouse come in, soon dealt with.

I only need to keep the temperature about 2-3 degrees above freezing, that shouldn't be too difficult.
Question Author
Lol Mikey, indeed!! "Llandegley International Airport" is just a mile or so up the road, we just have very very quiet planes landing there, not heard a single one yet! Its the worlds quietest airport I believe.
because of the size of your dogs couldn't you train them to open and shut said door lol x
Ratter...I drove past the sign a few months ago !

I also had a smashing breakfast, in a cafe associated with a garage, on a corner of the main road near there....can't remember what it was called though, although I expect you know !
Question Author
Mikey, if you crossed the road from that cafe you would be in my garden.
Flipping heck Ratter !...I would have called in have a chat and see your lovely dogs if I had known !

Good breakfast in that cafe...recommend it to all your friends !

mallyh, "because of the size of your dogs couldn't you train them to open and shut said door lol x"

Irish Wolfhounds were unfortunately never blessed with a lot of intelligence, so training isnt overly successful apart from basic obedience, but I like your thinking!
Question Author
We have eaten there many time, but now living directly opposite, eating there would be laziness, and yes they do serve a damned good Full English Breakfast.
Question Author
Call in anytime Mikey, I do work very long hours so not often home but if you are in the area, give me a shout!
Ratter...its not often I get up to your neck of the woods, but I will try next time I am near-by....thanks very much !
