Now that the weather is getting wetter and colder, I want to keep the conservatory door open but closed.

I want the hounds to have access out into the garden but for the access to close behind them to keep warmth in and rain out, this is a heated conservatory full of cactus plants, so need to be able to prevent them freezing.

Also I cant have a conventional dog flap due to the size of the hounds.

I was looking for a magnetic strip curtain but these only appear to be available in net form.

Any ideas?

Is this a sliding patio or hinged door Ratter? Does it open inwards or outwards if hinged?
Question Author
Its a sliding door Togo.
Question Author
The door only needs to be open about 15 inches for them to get in and out.
You could by the nets with the magnetic strips, cut the strips off and sew them to a thicker pair of curtains. I'm not sure if you can just buy the magnetic strip.

This may give you an idea or two Ratter. If it is a hinged door with a bottom field panel( ie not glass) with a mid rail to could remove the panel and make a frame to fit, then source the heavy duty flap shown in the link.

Thanks Tilly, if I have to resort to making my own strip door then those strips will be ideal.
Righto think again Togo. Give me 5.
How will a curtain keep the heat in if the door is open ?

My first thought is a vertical set of polythene/vinyl strips .. the sort they have on commercial walk in cool rooms. But it wont keep the heat in ... with your door open your boiler will run non stop.
Question Author
Thanks Togo, its given me some ideas to work with.
I have to say that we just get up and open the door for Tilly when she wants to go out. I would not leave the door open for her to walk in and out freely.

However, I am trying to be helpful. :-)
Is the slider on the outside or inside Ratter?
Question Author
The sliding door is on the outside.
Could you make a frame that fits from the inside fixed section to the wall or frame opposite it that is easily removed when you want to lock it or summer comes, then fit it with a horizontal transom bar to suit your dog's size with a flap or curtain pinched from the link from earlier. I don't suppose you need to be too security conscious given the size of your hounds. Lol.
This is getting a bit too technical for me. I'm bowing out now. Keep thinking, Togo. :-)
Open the outside door the required width then fit a clip on solid piece to cover the gap which will be in two parts joined by a hinge which should swing to allow your dogs garden access but swing back to the closed position.
ratter..cats are so much easier !!

Im now thinking of maybe a heavy duty shower curtain cut into strips and attach magnets along its length to allow it to open and close, with a heavy conventional curtain on the inside to keep the heat in.

The conservatory is heated by means of a 180w greenhouse/conservatory heater that will stay on 24/7, Well it will be from today when I install it.

I only need to keep it warm enough to keep the cacti from being killed off by the cold weather.

Question Author
Thanks Togo, certainly worth looking at!
