Agapanthus

can anyone tell me if I have to cut agapanthus right back during the winter as some of the leaves are looking a bit sorry for themselves and the plant is taking over the garden x

I tend to leave the leaves on to provide some natural frost protection...but I do that with most of my plants, not clearing the garden till spring. I think this is kinder to the garden wildlife as well. I don’t worry what the garden looks like in winter. I am not sure how removing dead leaves or not will stop the plant taking over the garden though?

I agree with woofgang about leaving things until spring. You're lucky to have a happy agapanthus that spreads, mine hated being in the ground and I had to put it back in a container.

It may be possible to give further winter protection by providing them with a mulch, something dry should do the trick, like straw or horticultural fleece.
Anything that will lay wet such as leaf litter is best avoided though.
