A cherry (Prunus) tree. Birds like to eat the buds and fruit. Come in all sizes and weeping. Have a look at the plant finder at http://www.rhs.org.uk/rhsplantselector/index.aspx
birds like elderberry trees as they eat the fruit..they grow quite quickly also..
crab apple, pretty in spring and autumn and the birds will eat the fruit, rowan, tall and skinny, bigger but an open canopy, the gean (the wild cherry) georgeous and scented in spring, then fruit which the birds will eat, then a fabulous autumn show and shiny bark, spindle, again beautiful autumn colour, viburnum, berries for the birds, plates of white blossom and fabulous autumn colour, elder, scent and colour black elder (sambucus racemosa nigra) smart elder with posh black leaves, pyracantha, the birds seem to like the red berried one best....oh the decisions and my garden is full already (sigh)

If your looking for a native tree to support native wildlife and you dont have room for an oak, a birch is a good compromise and comes in quite a few shapes and sizes, and its tiny seeds may even attract some rarer birds like siskins.

Its a good idea to provide some cover too, to give smaller birds a safe place near your feeding station, as predetors like sparrow hawks may be looking for easy prey. I can think of nothing better than holly for this and you will have the added bonus of juicy berries, provided you can get hold of a female tree. Good luck..s.n...

to be the most beautiful smallish tree is the robinia pseudoacacia freesia, lovely delicate golden yellow foilage
