Smart Meter (Again) !
36 Answers
I've been resisting with all my might getting a smart meter and ignore the many phone calls I get from my provider by just letting them go to answerphone, but today in the post I have had a card telling me to book a smart meter appointment ! Do I have to ? They don't say that it's compulsory anywhere on the card. Be grateful for any assistance. Thanks.

Anyone with common sense does not need a smart meter ...... I know when I need a light on, how much water to put in a kettle or when to turn the heating down. I also send off meter readings to my power supplier on my pc without any problems ....... what do I need a smart meter for?

No barry1010 ...... I am not confused by anything ...... to check to know what power you are/are not using you have to look at the meter. I know it sends readings to your supplier, but to use it correctly you have to be able to read the meter, otherwise how do you know if you are using too much power !
teacher - the smart meter is the meter that replaces the old 'dumb' gas and electric meter. My electricity smart meter is outside my house in a cupboard, the gas one is in my garage. I can get the meter readings from them if I want to. They send constant readings to the supplier.
The bit that you can choose to look at and see how much your fuel is costing is an in home display unit. The smart meters work perfectly well if you unplug the in home display and put it in the bin.

Imwas offered one by my supplier, so said yes even though I new it was not compulsory.
Meter man was due on the Sunday - he never appeared.
Speaking to a neighbour later in the week - she had a meter man on the Sunday - but she has a smart meter.
We came to the conclusion he went to her instead of me - her address is 10 higher than mine!

I was never "pestered" to get a smart meter by my then supplier First Utility (now Shell). I got one because it gave me the cheapest tariff. I don't use the home display unit because I only use what I gas & leccy I need to use. I don't have to bother sending readings & I can view my monthly usage & cost any time I want on the website.
