Toilet Handle

I paid a plumber about maybe 3 or 4 weeks ago to fix my cistern and I have been very happy with the job. Problem was I had no flush hardly.

However have just gone to the toilet and toilet is flushing but I have the old fashioned sticking out of the cistern and it has come out a good bit. Very loose.

I looked inside where the handle is and there is a plastic ring has come loose - I have tried to tighten it but in vain - just goes round and round.

I will call plumber of course but is there anything I can do - I know it is minor but still the handle is hanging loose.

Stupid question first - have you tried turning the plastic nut the other way?

Call your plumber and ask him what to do jj.

I have Mamy - but turning one way or the other - won't "grip".

ach I will call him but I'm not bad at DIY and thought I could tighten it. Perhaps the little plastic thing is "wore". You know the "threads" aren't gripping. As long as it is flushing - as it was so great not having to use the yellow submarine/bucket.

Probably a simple job. Just be careful with it & push it in rather than pulling on it until you can get it attended to.

If it won't screw on like this, then it may be stripped/worn.

Note, he does it the wrong way first.

I have viewed a few Youtubes after yours Mamy - and whilst I have screwed both ways I can sorta see that the rubber ring at the cistern wall looks as if it has "warped" you know not fully rounded hence not tightening.

May need a replacement then, call to the plumber sounds in order.

In the video the nut is a left hand thread. Very often the act of pushing the handle down over a period of time, tends to unwind the nut but by having a left hand thread it helps to keep it tight whenever the handle is used.

fixed - plumber came and said a bit of the rubber inside the cistern had broken off, so that's that.

I haven't had my boiler serviced in some years and as he was upstairs fixing the cistern - I thought to myself - oh I'll ask him does he know a trustworthy boiler service man. Great minds think alike. He came downstairs and said "you know I service boilers too". Yippee - he's coming next week.

My last boiler service man was very very good (retired) and so I have the same faith in this guy. Good tradesmen are so hard to come by.

PS - rubber and also brand new handle - all new stuff.

thanks Mamy - off to get ready for to get bloods done re diabetes at 2pm. They'll be way off as I have been eating too much choccies due to one eye (ie double vision) yes - anything for an excuse. LOL
