Why Is It So Difficult For A Couple To Rent A Property If They Wish To Get A Dog?

Do all landlords assume that all dog owners are unruly yobs who would let their dog run riot? All adverts say no pets, what would happen if they already had a dog? Is it a choice between losing their beloved pet or being homeless?

1) dogs can be smelly
2) dogs can destroy things ( we had 1 dog who despite having a reasonably long muzzle managed to chew plaster off the walls)

It's a shame because pets have been shown to be beneficial for mental health. Even more necessary these past few years.

Pasta, I think having a roof over your head is more beneficial to your mental health than having a dog. I think that having a partner is beneficial to mental health, and having a human partner even more so.

All I see where I live is people walking their dogs around the parks and up on the South Downs. Oh and there's always the odd one with a dog in his/her handbag;-)

It’s also difficult to rent if you have a child and cats. Thankfully, my landlord (years ago) was happy to have me as a tenant because I’m a decent person, didn’t annoy the neighbours and paid my rent on time. (He would have replaced those carpets anyway, so the cat scratch marks didn’t matter too much.)

I can understand landlords not wanting pet owners, but if I were to become a landlord I’d rather have a decent tenant with a dog than a nightmare one without.
