I have a question and don't know what category to put it in ... do you have to have a Licence to be a Landlord? Ad on radio this morning says �5000 fine if you don't have one .. website is American.

I think that there was something in the paper about this the other day - if the property is classed as an HMO or house of multiple occupancy, then it has to be licenced. The full details are here: http://www.odpm.gov.uk/index.asp?id=1151996

i think this may be something that is going to happen in the future. it will be to catch all the landlords who collect rent but don't decare it for tax. the gov will use a different reason but that'll be why really.


i think it's a good idea cos to many people who don't pay proper tax are subsidised by us that do.and they deprive people of houses to buy.

Had another look and in fact the HMO licence comes in place on 6th April this year.

Yes, I have now found out, thanks everyone. It is for landlords with multiple tenants like students etc. Thanks again, at least it doesn't affect me thank goodness.
