Black bamboo

I recently bought a black bamboo, but the new canes are more green than black. Do I need to do something to the plant or do they just vary?

The canes (culms) of the black bamboo (phyllostachys nigra) shoot green and then turn black over time, usually within a year. To speed up the process give it as much exposure to direct sunlight as possible.

I've found it takes 2-3 years before they reach their full blackness
