Gas heating - a question.
3 Answers
Like many others, I have recently been hit by HUGE gas bills. I'm not going to change my supplier for the simple reason that I have found thru past mistakes, if it's not broke, don't break it, but I am going to get my house fully insulated.
The question is tho, what do you reckon is best. To keep the heating on all the time so the house is constantly, if only moderately, warm, or to only put the heating on when needed, meaning you have to heat the house from cold.

My gas central heating is set to come on twice a day - two hours in the early morning and two hours in the evening.
Of course it is turned off now, until the cold weather returns.
This keeps the house at a comfortable temperature and gives plenty of hot water.

What I didn't put, and maybe should have, is that I don't think changing suppliers is going to make any real difference in the long term. I'm with British Gas, and have now frozen my charges under the latest offer. Although others may be cheaper at the moment, I am quite sure - considering it all comes from the same source - their prices will rise also. My point was, price aside, I am happy with them - price isn't everything to consider.
Postdog, I'm with you on the changing over thingy! We have been with British Gas since last year when we returned to our house after being away for four years (husband in the Army) Everybody keeps teiing us to change suppliers because this one is cheaper or that one is cheaper but they are all the same! When one company puts their prices up, you can bet that all the others will follow. We are on the frozen charges til 2010 and we also get a discount because I claim DLA. We keep our heating on all day but it goes off at night (I suffer with arthritis and affected by the cold weather). I suppose if I was out all day then I would just have it on on the morning and evening, but each to their own! I am fed up with reps from other companies coming to the door and telling lies to get us to change over to their company, but, like you, I am happy with British Gas and intend staying with them.
