Is it possible to obtain a permit to gather firewood for personal use from forestry commision woods. I dont intend going in to fell any standing trees, but there tends to be a huge amount of good timber left lying around after they do a bit of harvesting. Any advice appreciated

However some of the plantations may have facilties for selling already cut logs, which is probably not what you want. Have your tried Googling their website to see whether that offers any information?
Another option may be to join a volunteer groupe that does forestry work ie coppicing or pollarding etc, either with the forestry commision or local authority, most of which are affiliated to the BTCV, British trust for conservation volunteers. You could find yourself making some new friends, doing some saticfying work and helping to conserve our woodlands and maybe with a few logs thrown in! All the Best. T bird.
Although much more efficient when burned in a wood-burning stove than in an open fireplace, the use of firewood is arguably more environmentally friendly than many other fuels.
