Humming Fluorescent Lamp

I have a fluorescent striplight that has started to make a really irritating humming noise. The tube is quite new and is as bight as ever. Does anyone know if I need to replace the whole unit, the tube or just the starter?

I would try changing the starter first. It's possibly the cheapest option also.

Hi, try starter first as very cheap - literally pence, make sure you get the right one for the length of your tube. More likely to be the tube, don't forget to measure it before you go!

If you take the starter out whilst the light is switched on (but be careful) and the light stays on but the buzzing stops, then it's the starter at fault. Obviously, if you switch off the light at the point, it won't switch on again.

Just take it along to your nearest electrical store and ask them for a replacement. They don't cost much.

This is usually because the choke has become a bit loose in its mountings or it has a loose fixing screw or whatever, if you open the light you should see a small square metal box with two wires connected to it, that is the choke. just switch the light on now and hold the choke with something like a screwdriver and see if the noise stops. if yes then you will have to see some way to refix or tighten the choke in place.

Don't change the tube ... it will usually be the choke that hums
