Banging water pipes

Our cold water comes directly from the road, no water tank in loft and the pressure is very powerful. For about the last month, when you turn off the cold water anywhere in the house, bath, washbasin, kitchen sink or when the toilet cistern finishes filling up after flushing, there is a rattling noise like a loose pipe banging against a wall. We live in a bungalow with concrete floors and the bathroom is fully tiled. We have tried turning down the water pressure at the meter - no change. We don't know where to start to solve this. I'm concerned that something has come adrift and if we don't investigate we will end up with a flood. Anyone experienced similar or have any wise comments please?

Hi, it does sound like a pipe could do with an extra clip putting in, has it allways done this or have you had some work done recently?

It's only been happening a few weeks. What worries me is that the pipes are all behind tiles walls etc and as we're not sure where to look we could be dismantling a lot of expensive stuff. I can put up with the irritating noise, but do you think it sounds like trouble ahead?

Go to the highest point of your mains water pipe and insert an equal tee, and on the branch take a vertical pipe up about 2 feet or so and seal the end. When you turn the water back on it will cause the air in it to act like a cushion and silence the noise. It does not have to be at the highest but if poss. do it ! Hard@it

I would disagree Hard@it, that sounds like a perfect way to make pipes bang, not cure it. Have you actually done this? And it works?

I had a pressure valve fitted where
mains enters house,problem was solved,best of luck.
