Access to a path

10 years ago I created a gate in my backfence on to a small pathway between some houses. At the time I had the permission of the owners of the houses to do this. I have continually used this pathway although less so in the last year. The new owners of the houses say the path belongs to them and I can no longer use it. Have I created a right of access? - they say it is trespass.
