Fig plant

I bought a minature fig tree from the newspaper, its in a very large pot with drainage, its healthy and has doubled its size, but I dont want it ti get too big.
Any tips please on how to look after it, how many times per week should I water it and its outdoors we dont have a greenhouse, so should I cover it in winter.
