Magnolia Susan - Growing Conditions
1 Answers
My 2 year old Magnolia Susan is growing OK but some of the leaves are growing shriveled up and the buds grow nicely but before the proper flower develops the petals turn brown and the flower dies, it is planted in my hot border in full sun and the soil has some clay in it which is being broken down by using well rotted manure, but not on or too near the roots, the plant is about 4 feet high now.

It may not do very well if the soil is chalky. The manure is a good idea and is best left on top, as they hate any root disturbance. I think its a good idea to under-plant with low growing shrubs or ground cover plants, something that will adjust to shade as the tree spreads ie Mahonia or Heuchera. Bark chips on the surfice will suppress weeds, keep it moist and reduce the need to disturb the soil.
