smelly carpet

I hired one of those carpet cleaners and it really cleaned my carpet in fact it looks like new the only thing is it has left an awful smell and no amount of air fresheners or candles etc will get rid of this smell does anybody know what to do got visitors coming to stay at the weekend thanks

Cleanliness is next to smelliness!

Logically it should smell of 'clean', but whether it does or doesn't, you don't like the new smell. I wouldn't recommend cleaning it again - not straight away anyway - and can only suggest opening windows for a bit, and trying to mask or replace the smell in some way by applying something directly to the carpet. Perhaps (don't laugh) a hefty amount of 'Shake n Vac', or whatever it's called.

The smell is only due to it not being completely dry yet. If you open the window a bit and put an fan heater (gentle heat) in the room for a few days, you should drive the remaining moisture out. No need to panic!
