I used to push plant pesticide cardboard impregnated "pins" into my houseplants, but I think that they have been banned, Is there another once a season way of getting rid of fungus flies etc?

These fungus flies or sciarids are a devil to get rid of I've even seen them fly out of a brand new bag of compost on opening.
I'm not sure if those "pins" are still on the market but you can buy sticky yellow traps that you place above the plants.
'Pyrethrum' or 'permethrin' can also control them.
I have a sun dew plant in my green house which exudes a sticky substance and also helps to control them.

If you are talking about little flies on the plants, a light spray of flyspray should do it, or put a little washing up liquid into a water sprayer, with water of course, spray it on and a few minutes later wash it off with clear water. Good for bugs on outdoor plants too, but make sure to wash off the washing up liquid afterwards !
