Is it worth spending 200+ on a mattress topper, & are they as comfortable as people say?

I saw an advert for them today, it caught my attention, so i'll be watching your thread.
Memory foam mattresses are very comfortable but they can get incredibly hot in summer and tend to retain your body heat. I'm not sure whether a memory foam mattress topper would have the same effect. It's not so thick as a proper mattress but I guess the heat retaining properties would be the same.
I once spent several nights on one of these mattresses in a heatwave. It was like sleeping on top on an oven and whenever I rolled over I took all my body heat with me. For that reason I would never buy one. Certainly if you're somebody who sweats a lot or generates a lot of body heat I wouldn't recommend one. And if you're a menapausal lady suffering from hot flushes they definitely a big NO NO !!
If you suffer from restless leg syndrome you should not consider a memory foam mattress.

Your body sort of 'sinks' into it, and you would be struggling against it all night long.
We tried one and in about three days we had to take it off as we were burning up !!!! They just get incredibly hot and you feel as if you are on an electric blanket which is set to max. I also feel the cold a lot so its not as if I am a warm blooded person.
I have one and your right ..I didnt know why I was so hot all the time and woke up soaked n sweat .
Now I know ..oh boy ..roll on summer ..NOT.

Thank you for all your answers. I sweat like a Geordie in a spelling test when i'm in bed, so i'll save myself 200.
Would just like to clarify why the memory foam toppers are hotter to sleep on.

By nature, memory foam contours the body very well. Unfortunately, that means that it makes more contact with the skin.

The body cools via skin being exposed to air. Since less skin is exposed to air, the memory foam feels hotter to sleep on.
