I have recently moved and replaced all the bulbs with energy saving ones. Last night I noticed a strrange smell which I thought was electrical and also heard a funny noise. I eventually discoved it was coming from a new light bulb which was also very hot and I had to turn the lights out to let it cool down before I could replace it. It was ok then but must say it was only on for a few hours. Tonight the smell is there again and the bulb is hot again although neither are as bad as last night. Has anyone any ideas on this? Thank you.
Just make sure that the smell is not from glue on the lampshade, this happened to me once and I thought it was the bulb but it was some awful glue, once I replaced the lampshade it was fine. Could be that it made a noise anyway and you are just linking the two.
I use a long life bulb in my son's bedroom and when it gets dusty it emits a smell! Also makes a noise just when they are about to go (after several years now of using them)
as nether edge said it shouldn't get red hot. it's a duff/faulty bulb. if it gets too hot it could be a fire risk so get it changed.
i had one that lasted three days then did a chip pan impersonation!!
