Help. I am being driven mad by a chirping . I thought it was in the smoke alarm itself. It didn't respond to a new battery, so I removed it only to discover that the chirping is up in my ceiling. What next? Does it mean that this was a shoddy job when the place was built years ago, as I can't see how it could be accessed. It is floor sppace above, not loft. There are about 5 cables joining into one, which was connected to the old alarm. is there no way of shutting it off or do I have to wait until I can get an electrician?

Hi sundayquest
When you say that the smoke alarm is wired, is it hard wired into a system. If that is the case, you should not need a battery.
Other than that, do you have more than one smoke detector as it really sounds to me like the battery in dead.
Sounds like a bird has found its way in to your house and has become trapped between the floor/ceiling layers. Don't worry - it will soon either die or find its way out.

No birds! I have 3 smoke alarms, one in garage, one in upstairs landing and this one in longe. Its atown house. They are wired into the electrical system. I have totally detached the alarm as replacement battery didnt make any difference. i even tried one from an alarm which is working. the battery wsa an alkaline one, and just a back up i think.

Just an off the wall suggestion. Do you have a battery back up on an alarm box ( often positioned on the brick apex at loft level.) This might need replacing.

Thanks. it was worth a ry. have looked in loft. can't find anything. I think its under the floor in the hallway, but haven't yet succeeded in removing the piece of flooring. Meanwhile its chirp, chirp!
