first use fabric conditioner with your powder & also try a limescale remover,
What does your hubby do for a living? Mine and son are commercial paint and decorators. Wash their work clothes separate from anything else as they sometime still retain smell of spirit etc. Have been known to use aromatherapy oils in my wash (a macho one!) Is machine taking all the powder?. I use liquid and conditioner in one. Are clothes spun dry when you remove them - if not you may have blockage and foul water stored. Remove clothes immediately after wash done or they can begin to stagnate. Machine being one year old doesn't make any difference. Luck of the draw with machinery.
Take out the drawer you put the washing powder and fabric conditioner in. Give the drawer a really good wash and then clean out the space the drawer goes in with a bottle brush. Mine gets disgustingly filthy! Then put the drawer back in and without adding any detergent or anything else put the machine on the hottest wash you can. This not only gets rid of any gunk and residual powder but the hot wash should get rid of whatever makes that smell. Do this every few months.
Aggie and Kim reckon that you should put a cup of washing soda in the drawer and then do a hot wash then a cup of vinegar in the drum and then a hot wash .This should get rid of any smells .However ....I had this problem recently and it turned out to be foul water coming back up the outlet hose, which was blocked so I would check that first .
