Can anybody tell me how to get rid of the dreaded duckweed (lemna) which has appeared in my pond from nowhere and is covering the surface. I would be grateful for any help!

Try using 'Barley Straw'. You can get small packs of them fairly cheaply in good garden centres. I heard this remedy on the TV and did it myself. It certainly does help, although there is a little still in the pond, but much clearer than before!
I tollerate duckweed to a degree, as it helps to keep down the blanket weed by shading it out, but I do not like it covering the whole surfice because it obscures my view of the fish and other pond life.
I find regular skimming off with a net in one area keeps it down to what I see as an exeptable level.
