I bought a 1ft high Yucca from Woolworths about 20 yrs ago. About 12 yrs ago I put it in an 18" high & wide terracotta pot close to a north facing wall. It is now over 6 ft tall & the leaves are only alive on the top 2 ft of stems (3). As it grows the lowest leaves have died off & I removed them for appearances sake but they would have dropped off eventually. Overwatering without adequate drainage kills most pot plants. Yuccas are native to southern North America, so will withstand dry conditions.
cut the lower leaves back too 2 inchs from the main stem
leave the stubs until bone dry then they will come with out much trouble
