I'm looking for a catch [the sort that you'd use to hold up a hinged section of worktop] that'd be suitable for exterior use - to hold a garden gate open. Does anyone sell such a thing?

I know the sort of thing you mean. The ones I am thinking of look a bit like childproof type locks for kitchen cupboards. Have you tried Mothercare? or how about Lakeland?
We have our gate held back with a brass cabin hook from B and Q
try a shopfitters or place that fits out pubs (as they both commonly use these things)...you might get them to sell you one.
