How can you tell if a victorian desk is original, and which type of wood is made at?

....quick tip though is to take the drawer out and have a look at the dovetail joints holding it together....Older pieces of furniture have handmade dovetails which tend to be smaller and irregular in size and shape....Modern pieces are machine made and are uniform.

Saw through one of the legs and count the rings - that should tell you how old it is.
