Kitchen Fitting

How easy/hard is it to install a kitchen? Reason i'm asking is that i am just about to move into a new flat that needs a new kitchen. However after a trip to MFI to utilise their free design service, they quoted �1500 for the kitchen (as expected) and another �1500 to fit it! Would it be a preety straightforward job to do it ourselves or is it best leaving it to the professionals? Thanks.

Electrics, gas & plumbing are best left to people who know what they're up to. Best bet is to check the small ads in your local paper and you should find independent kitchen fitters. One did mine for a third what the store were going to charge.

The price of the kitchen seems ok, but that is a mad price for fitting. Try to get a price for fitting from a carpenter/joiner. If your not changing the layout of the kitchen too much, the electrics and plumbing should be ok.

Like the previous Ab'rs have said it's quite hard to do some of it yourself but you might be able to do some if you're quite good at DIY. If you've got uneven walls it can be hard to do yourself because they can adjust backs/sides of units much more easily than you can bodge it yourself! When I had a new kitchen done I got B&Q to do it because although it was expensive it was less hassle because they arrange all the different trades in the right order with contractors, the work is guaranteed and if we had done it badly and the kitchen looked a mess I would not only have been disappointed but potentially have lost money on my house value. However, both my husband and I are hopeless at anything beyond decorating so we're probably a special case. I have to say that �1500 doesn't sound too bad compared to what we paid but a lot of the price on ours consisted of extra sockets and moving the gas cooker point. Good luck with the project.

Try a joinery and or building company. They are sometimes cheaper. They can both do the complete package. If all that you are changing is the units, but the actual bases are ok, why don't you just add new doors. Can be bought off the shelf or a joiner can make them up.
