how can you stop badgers digging up your lawn

I don't think you can really do anything. I do beleive that badgers are a protected species now and as such any attempts to disturb their setts, relocate them or kill them would probably result in you being on the wrong side of the law. Then again i'm not up to scratch on the law + badgers, so don't take my word for it.
Assumimg the sett isn't in your garden you can fence them out. It does require a very strong fence well buried in the ground. An electric fence will stop them but probably isn't feasible.
Contact your local pest control operative, they are usually happy to give ad-hoc advice and will certainly know the laws surrounding each species. Obviously they hope you'll employ their services but the best ones will give you self-help advice first knowing you'll come back to them another time.

you tell em they wont be allowed to join the scouts if they carry on like that???
