Update a fireplace

Is there anything I can do to update the look of a red brick firepace in my living room?

Really depends on what your decor is in your living room - I had one in a house and when I replaced the carpet with a timber floor and painted the walls white I simply applied a mottled wash of watered white emulsion to lighten the brick and give it a "distressed" look.

You could box it in using MDF and paint it with fire retardant paint.
