how much does it cost to get a fireplace knocked out?

it is in the middle of the house, half in living room and half in kitchen and in two bedrooms upstairs. want it knocked out to give us a bit more room but don't fancy doing it myself (not that brave)
just after a rough idea of cost to see if it's a 'go-er' thanks

It'll cost however much a contractor agrees to do it for !
If you want it partially removed i.e. leaving part of the stack in place, you'll need steel beams to support the remaining part. You'll need to get Building Control involved re; the design of the beams...........
You'll possibly need to hire a skip for the rubble, which may involve the purchase of a skip licence..........
To completely remove the stack may involve the hiring and building of scaffolding..........
Get yourself a reputable builder and discuss it all with him..

Word of caution. My mother's house is a semi with the chimney stacks still intact. She cannot hear anything happening next door. The next pair of semis have had theirs removed, and they can now hear everything going on each other's houses. Ask your neighbours if they have had this done and if there have been any ill effects.

Hardly the same situation, sandmaster. The chimney here is in the centre of the house, not between one house and another attached.

hi just done the same my self took stack off roof and took out breasts in house quite a diffcult job for beginner remember you have to make roof good and also support the floors because your floor joist sit into breast then theres the making up of ceilings.plenty of akro props scraching of head and plenty of cups of tea well wearth it tho plus 3 grand
