Hemlock handrail... best finish ?

Hi there, is there a cabinet maker/carpenter/decorator who could advise me on the best finish for a new hemlock handrail,newel post and spindles . I dont want to varnish, but am considering either oiling them or waxing them. Can anyone advise the pros and cons of either please. Many thanks

Cons..Will require re-coating every 2yrs or so on high
wear areas such as handrails etc.
Wax..........See above.
Varnish..Pros..hard wearing.
Cons..Difficult to apply for beginner. Takes at least
6hrs to dry between coats. Minimum of 3

Suggestion. Wax or oil spindles, & varnish hand rail & newel post.
