Lost the instruction leaflets.........can anyone give me some general info on how to adjust the time on/ time off settings etc.   I have 2 different types and am totally clueless.

You may need to give us a little more info, type of light and controller etc. But to take a wild guess, if you are talking about basic PIR lights that have a motion detector fitted below the light fitting, then all you need to do is look underneath the PIR part that sticks out from the fitting. You should see 2 dials. One normally has a symbol like the moon or sun. This allows the use of the fitting either during the night or permanently 24 hrs a day. Set the dial towards the moon for night only operation. The second dial may have a T for time or a symbol of a clock. Set this to its minimum and the light when activated will only stay on for about 30 secs. Continue to increase the setting upto normally a maximum of around 15 minutes. Brilliant answer.....and so quick too.  Sorry to stop at 3 stars.

My problem is that one light stays on for barely 20 seconds whereas the other would [and often does] stay on all night. 

We do have a lot of cats in the neighbourhood and I wonder if they could be augmenting the problem?

The animals will set them off, however if it stays on all night you've definately got the time setting up to its max. Have a try anyway and see how you get on. Let me know the results.

The sensitivity of most sensors can be adjusted, which would eliminate the cat activations.

When it is dark, try turning the light off and on again in quick sucsession. I have a security light in the back garden and you have the ability to have it on permanently, say for a late BBQ in the summer.
