high water bill

ive had a high water bill and all we keep being told to do is check the meter and see if we have a leak, a plumber said that for the amount of the bill if we had a leak we would have been floating out teh door by now! is yours high and how many people in your house thanks

About £1,200 a year...4 people. We're not on a meter though.
mine's £10 a month for one person......it used to be £7 but my builder used quite a bit of water this year....

it cost me about £20per month when i was living on my own. i didnt even have a washing maschine or a dishwasher!!
sorry no ummmm.......I'm just answering the question.....I'm on a meter.....shower most days (never have a bath)......do a full wash about twice a week......car washed about once a month.

you could try watching the meter and see if it is going round when you think no water is being used, this indicates a leak somewhere. If the leak is underground you wouldn't be aware of it.
Very high bills are usually associated with no meter and high rateable value properties.
There could be a fault in the meter.
Just some thoughts.
SE London - Thames Water - 3 bed terrace, no meter, £325 pa
1 bed 'starter home'.
1 person.
No washing machine.
No dishwasher.
Metered.
Anglian Water.

Typically £15 per quarter. i.e. £60 per year.

two people just had a 6 month bill for nearly £500 quid, anglian water said after we did all the tests that there must be a leak somewhere and we have to find it, so how do we do that???? a plumber friend said for that size of bill if we had a leak we would be floating out the door!
As your plumber friend has indicated, you would noticed any leak which is actually inside your house. So any leak must be in the pipe between the meter and your stop tap. The only way you're going to find it is by digging down to the pipe.
