Whose wall it is?

We live in a terraced house, our neighbour's house on one side is 2 feet further forward than our house so there is an external corner 2.5 bricks deep that faces towards our front garden. This corner is visible from the first floor up to the fascia/guttering. On the ground floor we have a single storey lobby/bin cupboard that incorporates the external corner so the external corner is only visible from the flat roof upwards. All the houses in the row have this single storey lobby/bin cupboard - it's not been added later.

Now, the point of all this is that our satellite dish is attached to this external corner brickwork, on the part facing our front garden. Our neighbour's dish is just below our. He has told us that he gets interference with his TV picture and thinks that it's because our dish is next to his, the smallest gap between the dishes is 18". Then he said that it's his wall anyway and he didn't give permission (to the previous owners of our house) to locate the dish there. He hasn't asked us to move our dish yet....

So my question is - can an external corner between 2 terraced houses belong to one house or is it shared? And can a satellite dish disrupt the signal recevied by another dish? (we have no problem with our picture).

If his dish is directly below yours then no your dish can not be causing interference on his.

far more likely that there is either something like a tree in the way that yours can just see over but his can't or his dish has got water into the cable where it connects to the dish..

Does your boundary wall follow the profile of the corner?
If so then you may own 4 inches of that wall.
Does your dish over hang their property?
If so you will have relocate it, the survey on the house should have highlighted any issues.
It may be a useful compromise if you agree to relocate the dish and either one or both of you pay to do so, it should be no more than ten fiften pounds each.

Hi Sue Balou, is the back of your house 2 feet further back than his as is usually the case with terrace houses. From the way you describe it your dish is on his wall so he could if he wishes ask you to move it. As for the interference I would go along with Chucks answer. I had water getting into my cable a few years ago which caused the same thing to happen.

Of course the other thing that might be causing interference to him is his dish may be slightly out of alignment.

It only needs to be a degree or 2 out and it will seriously effect signal strength and quality and with the recent high winds it's perfectly feasible that it's been moved slightly.

123everton - the corner is entirely within our front garden (I just went out to check). Our single storey lobby/bin cupboard "wraps around" the corner and the boundary wall runs from the edge to the lobby/bin cupboard.
Both satellite dishes overhang OUR flat roof of the lobby/bin cupboard.
I've checked out survey - no mention was made of the satellite dish.

It sounds to me like the boundary line of the properties run along the outer edge of this wall you refer to.
If that is true, then your dish is mounted on his wall, but his dish is mounted on his wall but the dish is overhanging into your land.
If that is true, he could technically ask you to move your dish, but equally you could ask him to move his dish.
So I would try and agree that the status quo remains.

And to follow on from BM's answer.

While you are talking to them explain that a sky dish is a receiving antenna only, it does not transmit anything, so how close they are mounted to each other doesn't matter at all as long as one is not in front of the other therefore blocking the rear dishes view of the satellite they could be mounted touching each other.

You say yours is the upper of the two dishes so it is possible (though very unlikely) that there is an obstruction in front of the pair of dishes that is blocking a clear view for his dish but yours can just see over the top of it.

it is far more likely (as I said above) that the connection onto his dish was not properly sealed against water when it was installed (very common problem) and water has seeped into the end of the cable. This is an easy problem to resolve, just cut a few centimetres off the cable and refit the connector, wrap well with tape to waterproof and attach to the dish again.

I have to say I like BM's reply above, and if he is correct then you would indeed by entitled to ask them to remove their dish as it overhangs your property, also if they want to get any one in to look at their dish it sounds llike he will have to ask your permission to access it via your property.

I think your neighbour is going to be causing more problems for himself if he continues being petty about where your dish is mounted, I just hope he can see sense and realise that your dish could not cause interference to his and he gets whatever problem he has with his dish sorted rather than blame other people.
