MAKING A WHITE SAUCE WITHOUT BURNING THE MILK

I used to be able to make a good low fat white sauce without any problems, but recently for no apparent reason I am always burning the milk and left with the job of cleaning the pot.
How do I NOT burn the milk.

Use a lower heat setting on the cooker.
Turn the gas down?
By heating it in the microwave.
Use a double boiler?
