I have wrought iron gates and although they look great and are in excellent condition I would prefer a little more privacy so I was considering wooden gates. However when the gate guy came out to give me a quotation he mentioned it was possible to attach (don't know how) oak planks of wood on the back of the gates to give me the privacy I require. Has anyone heard of this before, or indeed seen it? Does it look good? I have tried to google for info but unfortunately haven't had much success.

I assume the gate guy is local and has carried out this modification to gates near you. Could you go and see samples of his work ?
Another simple fix would be to attach bamboo privacy screens...
They are available at garden centres etc..
You would just attach them by twisting wire around the wrought iron bars and then between the bamboo canes finaly giving it another twist.
Finish it off by trimming it to the shape of your gates.
Cheap and simple...and maintenance free..!
It is possible as long as there is enough room on the top and bottom of the gates to fix a rail or brackets of some sort to attatch the oak planks, and you should also make sure the gate posts are able to take the extra weight
