I have an ericaeceous borde with azaleas rhoddies and heathers. Thos winter was very severe in Scotland and I lost a few small azaleas. I wondered about planting one or two piers shrubs there by way of a contrast but I dont know if the acidic soil would be suitable for them. Can anyone advise? Many thanks kjsgran

Yes they'll be fine but if you have very cold winds they may suffer a little. Ours here in Derbyshire are doing very well despite a long cold winter.
I'm in Sheffield, 700ft up, and mine have never looked so good.
I'm in a very exposed place on Romney Marsh in Kent - planted some about October/November last year and they've done very well - have never had my soil tested but it seems very good.
This BBC site says acidic or neutral soil
